Why Spam occurs
|
Many Internet users receive unwanted e-mails. This is not an issue that affects Hotmail alone, it is a worldwide problem and is no different to the junk mail that comes by post to your home.
Spam occurs for three reasons:
- Internet users often unwittingly give out their e-mail addresses to companies that sell this data on to others.
- Some less reputable companies create software that searches the Internet for e-mail addresses and which can also randomly generate hundreds of thousands of names and addresses. These are then sent out en masse in the hope of reaching a bona fide web user.
- Unscrupulous companies use false information in order to open up legitimate e-mail accounts; they then use these accounts for improper purposes, and then close the account or leave it dormant and move on to repeat the process elsewhere. Their aim is to stay one step ahead of the game when it comes to companies like Hotmail tracking them down and cancelling their privileges.
One thing you should be aware of is that you should not reply to any Spam mails. The senders generate the mails on a purely random basis, and if you reply, you merely let them know that your e-mail address is active.
You will of course receive legitimate e-mails and newsletters from MSN UK or an affiliated company, but these are sent only in accordance with the terms and conditions which you accepted on singing up to our service.
If you would like to re-acquaint yourself with those terms and condition, please click here.
