What is the Industry doing about Spam?

We are working to combat Spam on four key fronts: Technology, Education, Enforcement and Self-Regulation.

Technology
Hotmail Helps Users Be Part of the Solution to Spam MSN Hotmail uses Microsoft-patented SmartScreen spam-filtering technology, which uses intelligent filters to not only help protect a customer’s own inbox from junk e-mail, but also help others who use MSN Hotmail. With a single click of an on-screen Report Junk E-Mail button, Hotmail customers can now help Microsoft more effectively root out spam before it gets sent to other customers.

Our new account sign up process helps ensure that MSN Hotmail accounts are registered to real people, not to the computer programs used by spammers.

Image filtering prevents images in e-mail from automatically opening. Spammers rely on information sent back by such images to locate active e-mail addresses.

We continue to restrict the total daily number of e-mails any one account can send in order to stop spammers using our service. We have ensured that this restriction is well above the level required for an average daily user.

Education
As part of our commitment to reducing junk e-mail, we've created user friendly guides within a special Spam-busting section of our site. By showing Hotmail users how to set up or modify their Junk Mail Filters, Safe Lists or even set up new spam free accounts, we aim to help our users beat spam once and for all.

Enforcement
Microsoft will support law enforcement efforts to identify, investigate and prosecute those who disrupt the company's services and detract from the consumer's positive online experience.

Civil Action
Microsoft continues to review spam mail under the U.K. Misuse of Computers Act of 1990.

Self-Regulation
Microsoft is assisting in the development of industry self-regulation guidelines and is working with other industry leaders to develop a set of guidelines for e-mail senders to adopt, so as to ensure responsible practices.
