Why have I received a blank e-mail?
|
There are two possible reasons for this:
The first, and more common, explanation is that you need to turn off the Rich Text Format (RTF) in Hotmail. The RTF feature is compatible with Internet Explorer browsers only and some problems may be encountered if it is being accessed using a different browser.
To turn off RTF formatting in an e-mail message:
- Click the "Compose" tab. The "Compose" page appears.
- Click the "Tools" drop-down list on the left above the message text box and select "Rich-Text Editor OFF".
The second is that you have received a mail containing a virus, but which the filters in Hotmail have stripped clean. Last year, a particular worm virus called Klez affected Hotmail in this way; given that new viruses are created each week, it's possible that you have a variation of this virus. The virus arrives as an e-mail message with an executable (.exe) or (.scr) file attachment. If this is the case, the mail will most likely be from somebody you do not know. The best course of action is to use the block feature in Hotmail and to keep you anti-virus software updated.
Don’t forget:
You should always be careful to ensure you are on the alert and take proper precautions to protect your computer against viruses. Be cautious about opening messages from people you don’t know- do not open attachments from users you do not know or those that end with .exe or look suspicious. Make sure your computer's anti-virus software is up-to-date (go to your anti-virus company’s Web site or call them to get more information). Back up the data on your hard drive(s) on a regular basis.
We continually work with McAfee to identify and report the latest viruses and regularly update the MSN Hotmail service with new virus signature files to protect MSN Hotmail customers worldwide.
